The Kudans of the Hanshin Republic
The world of the Hanshin Republic is unique in that each inhabitant, even a visitor such as Syaoran, has an attached kudan. What is a kudan? A kudan is a spirit that can engage in battle with other kudans and protect their human. It can also be used for other things, as Sorata said, "What you use it for or how you use it is up to you." Some people, like Shougo and his rival form teams and battle to see who has the stronger kudan. They also win rights to property. It is believed that kudans used to be gods back in the day. Therefore, each person in the Hanshin Republic is protected by a god. There are five levels of kudan: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and special [see pyramid]. Syaoran, Fai D. Flowright, and Kurogane all have special kudans, which came to them during dreams. A kudan is controlled by a person's mind; subsequently, the kudan's level depends on the strength of the person's heart and mind. In this sense, the kudan represents a lot of the individual's personality.
